'From Drawing: Wood Engravings, Paintings, Oil Pastels, Drawings' - Simon Brett & Juliet Wood
Our new exhibition, From Drawing: Wood Engravings, Paintings, Oil Pastels, Drawings is a collection of artworks by renowned local artists, Simon Brett & Juliet Wood.
Simon Brett trained as a painter at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London, in the 1960s. He relinquished painting in favour of engraving during the 1970s and has become one of the leading wood engravers of his generation, part of the revival of the medium. He has been freelance since 1989 and has illustrated over sixty books, many for the Folio Society and for private or fine presses. The most ambitious of these, The Play of Pericles (Barbarian Press 2010), illustrates every action in the play on over 100 blocks. As part of his advancement of wood engraving generally, Simon has edited collections of his fellow-engravers’ work, and has written a best-selling How To Do It book and a monograph on his teacher Clifford Webb.
Juliet Wood owes to the Arts Educational Schools her strong feeling for human movement and life. She trained mainly at the Slade. Motherhood was combined with teaching, largely at Swindon School of Art. Her busy, nation-wide portrait career – nearly 200 portraits – saw her work enter academic collections and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. She has also shown at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the New Grafton Portrait Centre. While teaching, Juliet discovered the joys of painting from sketchbook responses to human situations - her subjects ever since. A major series on Swindon life, launched by a public drawing event toured through 2013-14.
From Drawing: Wood Engravings, Paintings, Oil Pastels, Drawings will be showing at The White Horse Gallery from 3rd March - 2nd April 2023.
