Anna Simmons
Although Anna has painted all her life, she received no formal training until, after her career as a teacher, she attended Central St Martin’s. This period of study inspired greater focus in her work, enabling her exploration into the transformative power of light.
In her own words, she states: I like to paint urban landscapes and the interior of buildings: public spaces in cities within which a personal illumination occurs. The play of light and dark is a metaphor for our lives – longing for light and fearing the dark. But, if we have the courage to explore the dark times and accept them, we will see that we cannot have light without the dark. They really are one thing, and the most ordinary places; the bus stop, the escalator, have a beauty of their own. In every picture I put a human figure, often alone and unremarkable. The figure represents the bridge between the small human world and the huge world that we inhabit.
Anna's work has been exhibited and sold widely.
New Paintings will be showing at The White Horse Gallery from
Friday 1st November until Sunday 1st December 2024, during shop opening hours.
